The Early Bird: New Albums Overview 8-18-17 – 8-24-17

Grizzly Bear were a fully paid up member of the turn of the decades Brooklyn as Indie Haven scene, where art meant gentrification, and five years after the disappointing Shields, Painted Ruins reminds us that they always steer their psychedelic ruminations and experimental off-kilter sound rhythm on their best recordings of the decade, Grade: B. The eagerly anticipated new Ray Wylie Hubbard, Tell the Devil I’m Gettin’ There as Fast as I Can, will please the fanbase and lovers of dirty, would be dangerous Americana. Unfortunately, except for the killer title song, it sinks in wearying depth gates of hell concerns. Still, that vocal on “The Rebellious Sons (With The Bright Light Society)” is as otherworldly as it’s meant to be. Grade: B+ . Still on Americana, Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer’s two part harmonies are the highlight of this collection of covers originally by the likes of Nirvana and Nick Cave (And Bob Dylan), so if not dark yet damn close to it. The Louvin Brothers cover reminds me of early Everly Brothers.  Grade: B +

Two major rap releases this week. Kodak Black’s sequel to his 2014 album (and second release of the year) Project Baby 2, is his second release of the year. If Soundcloud Rap is all about Broward County, Black is from Golden Acres, a public housing project in Pompano Beach and has spent in his life in and out of trouble, mostly in. Here he is rapping to more trap tracks about life after prison, he was released in June, with top new rappers XXXTentacion and Offset on this state of the art worked out songs of poverty and its aftermath. Grade: B. Still Striving, the new A$AP Ferg album, gets rid of the bad taste from the Mobs terrible performance at Governors Ball in June, a featured artist extravaganza (including, wait for it, Cam’ron) of high energy club bangerz. Grade: B
