The Early Bird: New Albums Overview 8-4-17 – 8-10-17

I’ve been obsessing over Brett Eldredge, the answer to the musical question when is bro country not bro country (when it mythologizes women), whether smitten or rushing, craved out new love or caved in romantic daydreaming, Brett loves women and his eponymous new release is his best to date. Grade: A. If anyone has the right to cover Adele’s “Someone Like You,” it is the man who co-wrote it, Semisonic’s Dan Wilson. A master songwriter as able to write hits for DIxie Chicks and Chris Stapleton as mainstream popsters, his gorgeous new album Re-Covered is proof (Grade: B+)

Meanwhile, on the hip hop  front, any time we here from the A$AP Mob is a good day for New York, in theory at least, the last A$AP album I fell in love with was Rocky’s At Long Last.  A$AP Twelvyy ( a compression of 212) is a Bronx born member of the mob and his debut album 12 is a low down modern rap album, dark and brooding and in need of more than Flatbush Zombies or Rocky himself can provide it (Grade: B-). Randy Newman doesn’t so much rap as sing speak, and he does so on the somewhat self-financed Dark Matter, which circles the elephant in the White House, mostly because Randy didn’t include his song about the President’s penis “My dick’s bigger than your dick / It ain’t braggin’ if it’s true / My dick’s bigger than your dick / I can prove it too / There it is! There’s my dick / Isn’t that a wonderful sight? / Run to the village, to town, to the countryside / Tell the people what you’ve seen here tonight.” Newman, when he isn’t writing songs for Pixar (“You’ve Got A Friend In Me” remains one of his greatest) is a master satirist who thrives too much on irony. Dark Matter has its moments and many of them, the Trump song would have helped and so would a couple of better songs. Grade: B+

From the white lives matter department, Eagles Of Death Metal returned to Paris post the night of November 13, 2015, where  on stage at Paris’ Bataclan club, ISIS opened fire on audience members. I Love You All The Time: Live At The Olympia Paris, a document from their triumphant return to Paris in 2016. The abysmal Jesse Hughes has every right to request a get out of being criticised free card for this one, but he ain’t getting one. Grade: D. Meanwhile the Grateful Dead cash in again on the late grate o Celebrating Jerry Garcia & The Days Between (Live). Just what the world needs, another “Touch Of Gray”, Grade: C-
