The FYF Fest Has Announced Its ‘Female Badass’ Line-up
The FYF Fest lineup is finally here and it’s a mixed bag as far asI am concerned, with a few unexpected acts and a day in the fest’s schedule missing, as they go back to a 2-day event, whereas the fest had previously upgraded to 3 days during these last years. Since the split between Goldenvoice and FYF fest founder Sean Carlson, the updates had been really rare, but yesterday a short video featuring My Bloody Valentine was posted on the festival Facebook page, and today we have the full line-up with Janet Jackson and Florence + The Machine headlining each day… and the headliners as the rest of the lineup are currently dividing the FYF fest fans.
Sure My Bloody Valentine (on their only west coast date of the year) is a big deal and with the Breeders, Future, The XX, St. Vincent,Kali Uchis, Charlotte Gainsbourg (on her only west coast show of the year) they make a very eclectic and unexpected lineup, and if this has always been the attraction of the festival, trying to mix up genres despite its humble punk origins, I am not sure whether Janet Jackson’s fans are truly into ‘90s loud noise shoegaze… would it work?
With two female headliners, and plenty of women-fronted bands, the festival is certainly putting women at the right place, very probably because the new booking team, This Is Who We Are Now, includes 3 women (Emily Twombly, Jennifer Yacoubian and Stacy Vee) with 2 men (Dave Peterson and Dave Pianka). Jennifer Yacoubian had this to say to Rolling Stone: ‘In the past 15 years, this festival has grown immensely with a strong team of women and men behind it to bring fans the best weekend of summer. And with incredible artists like Janet Jackson and Florence + The Machine topping this year’s bill, we are so psyched to have two badass women leading the roster as we head into FYF Fest 2018.’
However, the FYF fest was always going for the unique and original, let’s just remember about Grace Jones’ incredible set 2 years ago! In comparison, Janet Jackson is as mainstream as you can go, and I suppose we will have Beyonce and Justin Timberlake next year. In a way, the FYF fest is becoming Coachella’s little sibling with lots of hip hop and R&B acts such as Future (who was also headlining Rolling Loud) Jpegmafia, Daniel Caesar, Kali Uchis, Rhye, Skepta, as well as plenty of electronic acts such as Yaeji, Daphni, Nina Kraviz, Lena Wilikens, Bicep, Courtesy, Jayda G, Moodymann, Pachanga Boys, Roman Flugel. Some acts like Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Car Seat Headrest may attract their original crowd, but many people may feel underwhelmed by the lineup announcement, … on a personal note, I am happy for my friends Prettiest Eyes to be part of their first FYF fest.
The summer festival will take place at Exposition Park in Los Angeles on July 21st and 22nd, and tickets go on sale on April 6th at 12 p.m. PST, and will be available for purchase on FYF Fest’s website, but can we talk about these prices? 2-day GA passes will cost you $249 ($299 last year for 3 days), a single-day GA will cost you $149 ($125 last year), a weekend VIP will cost you $549 ($546 last year).
