New Music: Somebody posted a link to Minimall’s debut EP, the wonderfully named Huh, in comments. Huh was released on June 16th, and I completely missed it. My loss, the five piece LA band are lo fi, hi tuneful dizzy fun folks, who on this debut EP , get it completely right and by right I mean the songs are shiny pop songs that will bring you nothing but pleasure. There is something a little tricky about the college age kiddies, it feels like maybe Shagg amateurism but it doesn’t sound like that, the harmonies are intricate, the shading, a flute on “Drunken Stars” is a lovely surprise, ingenious, and in the end it isn’t indie pop but a generational mutation away from the Roches. Minimall just performed in New York and I missed them and I would have gone -maybe Alyson Camus can check em out for us in LA. Grade: A
Old Music: The 2010s wasn’t good to Prince and 20Ten is a real bummer, I don’t feel like reviewing it. There would be better before he would die (personally, I loved “Baltimore”) but it is a depressing slog.
Independence Day: Here is a thought I’ve never had before, while we all consider the USA as being the single force that kept the USSR under check, perhaps the USSR was simultaneously the only force to keep the USA under control.
More Thoughts For Independence: The USA is quickly becoming the God Of Wrath from the Old Testament, not only in its support for the chosen people, but also in its bringing down fire and brimstone on those we disagree with and answering all the Jobs with a booming BECAUSE I SAID SO.
More More Thoughts on Independence Day: Paul McCartney On Donald Trump (Thanks Bill Holdship): ““I’m not a fan at all. He’s unleashed a kind of violent prejudice that is sometimes latent among people. Most people don’t feel it’s OK to be like that. When there were protesters at his rallies, Trump would say, ‘Oh beat them up, give them a good punch’ — wait a minute, I’m not sure that’s cool for a leader of a country to be saying that. Maybe for a hockey player. He’s unleashed the ugly side of America. People feel like they have got a free pass to be, if not violent, at least antagonistic towards people of a different colour or a different race. I think we all thought we’d got past that a long time ago.” When you lose Paulie…
Sports: Yanks won and I have great seats for today’s seats and the return of Sabathia, but we can’t take over first place… when you go to the game you want high scoring stuff, when you watch it on TV pitcher’s duels are just as good. Mets lost.
Business: AEG and MSG/Live Nation are at war. If you play MSG you can’t play LA’s Staples Center, you have to play the Forum. AEG have now responded by saying if you don’t play the Staples Center, you can’t play London’s 02! And there you have the end effect of capitalism in action.
Doomsday: Helen Bach has been having nightmares (or, knowing her, dreams might be the operative word) about the end of the world. This should help her: “North Korea said on Tuesday that it had successfully conducted its first test of an intercontinental ballistic missile, claiming a milestone in its efforts to build nuclear weapons capable of hitting the mainland United States”.
