These Days: Monday, January 16th, 2017
Martin Luther King (Day): The worst thing about becoming a legend is that somewhere or other you lose being human. Martin Luther King, the Civil rights activist who preached peaceful protest, played the media, got himself blackmailed by the Kennedys, and finally, joined the Kennedys and Malcolm X in perpetuity throughout the Universe. And then I got the day off. But he was all too human and to lose your humanity is too high a price for the eye on the prize.
Sports: OK, I’ve watched the playoffs and for all Aaron Rodgers gifts, Tom Brady will make mincemeat of him. I just don’t see how he can be beaten. The Pats didn’t bother showing up for a playoff game and still sleepwalked their way to a win.
Old Music: I don’t know why I’m putting off the Musicology review… should I get to it? I can’t quite get a handle on it for some reason, but I think I’m being a wimp.
New Music: And I am gagging to review the new Ryan Adams but so far so not reviewed.
Concerts: Next week sees my return to the concert scene with A$AP Rocky on Wednesday and Kings Of Leon on Friday… it’s been three weeks. A life time in rock nyc years.
Musicals: Like all right thinking people I worship Stephen Sondheim and am very excited to be going to see “Sunday In The Park With George” at the Hudson. It stars Annaleigh Ashford, the best new musical comedienne since Kristin Chenoweth was Sally Brown. Off-Broadway, the Times loved Jake Gyllenhaal in this production so I have high hopes. “he also demonstrates both the radiant, centered stillness that can anchor a crowded stage
I hate to agree with Trump but… ““Just tried watching ‘Saturday Night Live’ — unwatchable.Totally biased, not funny and the Baldwin impersonation just can’t get any worse. Sad.”
