These Days: Thursday, May 25th, 2017

Sports: New York Times report that last year Yankee’s ticket and suite revenues declined by $46 million in with th. You might claim that this is because the new Yankee Stadium is an overpriced, soulless sports stadium. And you would be right. But it is also because baseball’s woes as a sport is being pained via a lost generation. Blame? ESPN for moving summer games from 1pm on a Sunday afternoon to 8pm on a Sunday evening -between investing in children and a new audience and grabbing the loot. Also, the games are dull as hell, with bang bang plays reviewed time after time, and games nearing the four brutal hours average. Blame the end of muscle supplements that put the end to the home run heroes, blame football (though even that is slowing down), and blame the loss of George Steinbrenner who gave us the one great truth in life: winning is what matters in competitive sports. When I started seriously supporting the Yankees, I would spend my weekends at Yankee Stadium, high (and high) in the stands on warm sunny days, listening to the play by play on the radio… I went a total of two times last year. Baseball is one of the greatest things in the world, it is the jazz of sports, and it isn’t what it was.

Concerts: The nightmare of the Ariana Grande terrorist attack over and beyond the obvious, is that it changes the experience from an uncomfortable trudge through airplane like security checks into a scary trudge through the same. It is going to be very difficult going to concerts in the immediate future and the only question right now is how and where it will be repeated. For ISIS, killing young Westerners at play is a great format to make yourself appear to be bigger than you are. Murdering eight year old girl is a visual treat for these Islamic extremist, it sets out in stone a message: YOUR CHILDREN AREN’T SAFE. This is a potent weapon, it is the terrorist equivalent of boiling your bunny rabbit. It is both utilitarian and symbolic. It also reminds us of something: going to concerts in Arenas is its own reward, regardless of whether we are going to see a good or bad performer. Just being there is thrilling. What will happen to the new generation of young concert goers if there is another attack, just about anywhere in the States or Europe (Or Australia). God knows what happens once we get 3D bombs and/or undetectable bombs. Technology is about pacing us. If there is ever a dirty bomb exploded we will head straight to judgement day.

New Music: When I am not listening to Lil Yachty, I am over at NPR’s “First Run,” totally impressed with the new Justin Earle Townes. I thought this, his seventh album, might be the first time he screw up after not being convinced by the single, and the world needs more Stagger Lee like a hole in the head but it really is a terrific listen (B+).

Old Music: Or is that Old. New Music. My copy of the Sgt Pepper deluxe ($150) has shipped!!! I am still not sure that they are doing everything they could with the Beatles catalog. There should be a super duper Pepper with a book, live recordings (well, yes, I see that). Revolver next?

  1. Ray

Your comments about baseball are 100% spot on. It isn’t the game I watched when I was young.
