These Days: Tuesday, April 25th, 2017
New Music: John Mellencamp is to Woody Guthrie what Kamasi Washington is to John Coltrane, not an embarrassment but not in the same league and as Mellencamp grows older he emerges as a rickety crotchety fuck with a sense of disgust though never at himself. 2014’s Plain Spoken was pretty good and so is his new one, with Carlene Carter the featured artist, Sad Clowns And Hillbillies, and the only way that title could be more generically iffy is if he was cold Scary Clowns And Hillbillies. Still, in all its seeds fall on barren land Biblical folk meets country gruffness, it ain’t bad – Grade: B. A quick spin of the new Willie finds him in fine fettle, and I am no fan at all, at 84, or 34 for that matter, this is a jaunty country exercise. Grade: B
Old Music: Paul McCartney’s Give My Regards To Broad Street was published today and so back we go to the beginning. Elvis (Love), Planet Earth and Press To Play. Meanwhile, I am listening to the Barbra Streisand setlist I made on Spotify back in 2014.
Theatre: Excited to see Kevin Kline in the Noel Coward comedy “Present Laughter”. It got raves but I should warn em: I’m a strange stick to whittle.
Sports: Into the semifinals for the Rangers. I got a midsection for a relatively good price of $350 off stubhub for the first home game, hopefully we will be up 2 – 0 by then.
Concerts: Kendrick Lamar goes on presale today, this will be the fourth (or fifth, I think I’ve forgotten one) time I’m seeing him and at the top of the charts, he will be about as humble as ever. The gig is at Barclay Center, July 20th.
Death: Scott Baio on Erin Moran, who died from cancer: “I’m OK, a little shocked but not completely shocked that this happened. My thing is, I feel bad because her whole life, she was troubled, could never find what made her happy and content. For me, you do drugs or drink, you’re gonna die. I’m sorry if that’s cold, but God gave you a brain, gave you the will to live and thrive and you gotta take care of yourself.” On the day after she died. In case you doubted that he was asshole… and I know he thought it as an OD at the time, but come one, give it a rest.
More Death: Robert Pirsig, Author of ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,’ Dies at 88; Dennis Edwards, Judge Who Presided Over Trial of Lennon’s Killer, Dies at 95
