New Music: A good day at First Listen, where big albums hang out for a week before release to the general public. First and foremost there is the new and final Chuck Berry album, Chuck, a 34 minute sprint through what Chuck did, some of it great, some of it not so much, all of it Berry. I count at least three instant classic and even if there are a couple of head scratchers, they are still worth listening because it is Chuck and even if they were vastly worse, the great three join the canon (Grade: A). Big Thief’s Capacity reminds you that melancholia is an art form and sadness is a power as well (Grade: A-). Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, of whom there have been no rumors, disappointed during the single section of the pre-album publicity, but the eponymous album is much prettier listened to in one setting, it just takes a little longer to kick in than you’d hoped, “Love Is Here To Stay” is exemplary (Grade: B+). Finally, ANi DiFranco has seldom been my scene, the feminist folkie has only one “Untouchable Face” in her. That goes for Binary as well, though the Justin Vernon featured “Zizzing” is lovely (Grade: C+).
More New Music: The new DJ Khaled featuring Drake reminds you why Drake is the biggest hip hop star in the world today. Whoever else is good or bad, when you listen to “To The Max” you’ll discover Drake can do no wrong (Grade: A)
Old Music: All Donovan all the time…
Concert: Speaking of which, I read where Donovan sits cross legged on the stage for the entire concert. How does he recommend people see him?
The N Word: Mary Rudzis in her Governors Ball round up (here) being disconcerted by the white teens singing along to the “n” word during rap sets (luckily she missed YG) doesn’t coincide with mine . My take is nearly exactly what I wrote to Phil Mushnick when he attacked Chance The Rapper in the New York Post: there are worlds of difference between White Supremacist hardcore band Kingdom Falls singing “six nigger’s heads in my freezer” and Foxy Brown singing “Ain’t no nigga like the one I got, no one can fuck me better”.
Film” “Wonder Woman” gives us the superhero of our dream, in an action packed yet solidly human war movie: it is like a feminist war movie with super powers. And as for Gal Gadot, Lebanon will be doing their citizens a disservice if they banned it because she is Israeli (Grade: B+)
The Presidency: “There are serious concerns about this president’s mental stability and there are serious problems when you have a president of the United States who is so erratic, so unreliable,” Jennifer Rubin said on CNN’s ‘New Day.’ “This is incredibly damaging.”
