Concerts: I can’t imagine a worse idea than Nick Caves concept last night at the Beacon, demanding that the aisles be filled with audience members so you couldn’t see, couldn’t move, and the aggressive tendencies of people shoved about like rush hour commuters, always a push away from a brawl, could take a concert and turn it into soccer hooliganism. Tell Nick to take his messianic self-love and temper it. Grade: B-
More Concerts: Speaking of messianic tendencies, I got a ticket to Hillsong United early show on Sunday. My feelings about these guys is well documented (I just gave their new album an “F”). Funnily enough, a friend of mine is a member of their New York Congregation and tells me their services at Highline Ballroom are consistently sold out… my problem isn’t religion, though like Nick I have problems with an interventionist God (like an iota of proof), however, it isn’t for me to judge and so all my problems are musical. Still, I wouldn’t mind getting up close and personal with the faithful.
Assassination: The Republican Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in a Virginia during baseball practice. Two capitol policemen were also injured and it could very easily have become a bloodbath. The police have a suspect in custody and there seems to be no doubt the shooting is politically motivated. Remember the Reagan attempted assassination? Same instinct. This is the price of a country veering into chaos.
Megyn Kelly: Of all the ridiculous things I’ve read about, Alex Jones “I’ve looked at it and undoubtedly there’s a cover-up, there’s actors, they’re manipulating, they’ve been caught lying, and they were pre-planning before it and rolled out with it” about the Sandy Hooks massacre is the worst. I see no reason to give this lunatic any free advertising, even if Kelly plans to slam him, there are enough lunatics around to grab onto it. Kelly is opening her Sunday evening news program with the denier, and while I will certainly get attention, at what price? Apparently, Obama was behind it.
Sports: Yanks lost 2 – 3 to the A’s, which sucks, but Sabathia was taken out after four innings with a pulled hamstring.
New Music: “If We Were Vampires” has worked its way into my top twenty singles of the year. Maybe Jason’s great subject matter is domestic love. Certainly, in a world with barely an original thought not sung about, true love as transient is an original thught for a song.
Old Music: Can’t say I’m thrilled by the Tom Petty setlist.
