Miley Go Home

In response to Iman and Hel on SNL – Miley Cyrus (read it here): As  a parent, my job is to protect my daughters; teach the importance of a healthy diet & exercise; encourage them to do their personal best; model empathy, kindness and respect while maintaining a healthy sense of adventure and free-spiritedness. I don’t want clones. I want free-thinking little girls – teenagers, adolescents, women – whom challenge themselves daily in a positive way. I have no problem with failure. I have a problem with not giving it your best shot. Many days I fall short but every day I wake up and say I will do a better job.

Why did I let my girls watch the first two acts of the VMAs? There are enough things keeping me up at night that I certainly do not need to accelerate any questions regarding sex. Yeah, I have a problem with Miley Cyrus. I am not judging her for her actions. I am all for self expression and growth. Musically, she is boring. On stage (VMAs), she is awkward. She lacks authenticity and depth. It’s her party and she can do what she want but this is my house and these are  my rules and … no more Miley Cyrus.

Instead, I prefer my daughters take an interest in woman whom have done amazing things in their life. Women who radically changed the role of a woman in a man’s world, persevered though faced with unimaginable obstacles, work incredibly hard and give back, women who have gone where no woman has gone before – women who have left the world a better place.

Quotes from famous women:

Harriet Tubman – Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.

Eleanor Roosevelt – The battle for the individual rights of women is one of long standing and none of us should countenance anything which undermines it.

Helen Keller – True happiness … is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.

Amelia Earhart – Never do things others can do and will do if there are things others cannot do or will not do.

Temple Grandin – I get satisfaction out of seeing stuff that makes real change in the real world. We need a lot more of that and a lot less abstract stuff.

J.K. Rowling – I think you have a moral responsibility when you’ve been given far more than you need to do wise things with it and give intelligently.

Bethany Hamilton – Courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent, guts. That’s what little girls are made of; the heck with sugar and spice.

Taylor Swift – I wish all teenagers can filter through songs instead of turning to drugs and alcohol.

Miley Cyrus – People like controversy because that’s what sells. Brilliant.
