Two Indie Music Festivals Just Got Cancelled

Spaceland Block Party is no more… at least for this year. I received an email earlier today, telling me it had been postponed till next year. No reason was specified and all speculations are game right now, but this is the official statement:

‘Due to unforeseen circumstances,
we have regretfully had to postpone Spaceland Block Party
to Spring / Summer 2018.

Ticket holders may obtain full refunds at their original point of sale. (Amoeba, Nightout, TicketIQ, and Ghost Ramp).

All tickets purchased through Ticketfly will automatically be refunded by Ticketfly, and refunds will appear in 5 – 7 business days.’

I had asked for credentials to cover the festival, and this is why I was told about the cancellation, despite the fact that lately, every where I was going on the web, there was an ad about Spaceland Block Party, a downtown festival which was moved last week to Union Station, and was supposed to feature Vic Mensa, Highly Suspect, the Horrors, Joey Bada$$, Big Wild, Bishop Briggs, and many others.

Does it mean they couldn’t sell enough tickets? For what other reason would you cancel a festival you have advertised to death everywhere?

Mainfest, a music festival in Alhambra I did attend and cover last year, has also been canceled for this year, releasing with the same kind of statement:

‘Due to unforeseen circumstances, organizers for Mainfest Alhambra have officially cancelled their September 9 event.

It would have been the sophomore year for the music festival, which had a successful debut last year with headlining act, Capital Cities, and other performers such as Miami Horror, Nite-Funk, Dead Sara, Thee Commons and SWIMM.

The Mainfest Alhambra team regrets the necessity for the cancellation, but wanted to ensure that they deliver the high-quality festival experience that was originally envisioned and executed in 2016, as well as what they feel concertgoers deserve.

Mainfest also extends apologies and thanks to all the music fans who were planning to attend the festival. Refunds or credits for tickets can be processed through Ticketfly or through the outlet where buyers purchased their tickets.’

So that makes two small indie festivals canceled for September, and let’s hope that Sunstock Solar Festival will make it, so far it is still announced for September 9th.

May be there is a saturation of festivals, we just had the free-for-all Echo Park Rising, soon there is the Ohana Festival in Doheny State Beach, then at the end of this month there is Long Beach’s Music Tastes Good festival, and I am only mentioning the big events as small ones are happening every week.
