Maggie Szabo at the W Hollywood Hotel

I saw Maggie Szabo at the top of the W Hollywood Hotel last year, and everyone in the spacious loft was blown away by her big voice and her amazing vocal range. She gave a mini concert after the screening of her new music video for ‘Forgive and Forget’, but the petite powerhouse had nothing to prove with already million hits on YouTube, a few titles in the emerging artists category, and numerous features on high profile media outlets including Billboard, Perez Hilton, Huffington Post and Yahoo Music! among others.

The Canadian-born singer has a new video for her song ‘Don’t Give Up’, and her voice once again soars with soul, emotion and conviction over a hooky sing-along chorus, as if she were a new Adele. If the song lyrics are vaguely referencing to a heartfelt feeling about love, the classic ‘never give up on love’, the video tastefully tells an intriguing story, the story of a young woman getting ready for a prom date, and visibly struggling with her identity. And while she is reluctantly putting her red lipstick on and pulling her ballroom dress on, she is about to realize that her cool date has completely understood her struggle. Magically, he brings her into a chill place, where she can change and wear man clothes to be more in phase with her true identity. I got a bit lost when the two finally dance and flirt… Is she gay? Is she a transgender? I guess, but in this case, is he gay? This video doesn’t give all the answers, it is just a fairy tale about nice people accepting differences, rejecting any binary classification of genders and accepting all the fluidity you can imagine. And it’s not the real world, most of the time!

Maggie Szabo has announced that part of the proceeds from her music video will be donated to the Ali Forney Center, whose mission is to protect LGBTQ youths from the harms of homelessness.

The video is a love letter of support to the LGBTQ community through a touching story, and since this community has recently been attacked by the current administration, it is more than ever important than warm and thoughtful singers like Maggie Szabo bring their support.
