I have seen Perfume Genius a couple of times, and he is certainly an interesting performer with an intense stare and a unique sonic world. I really loved his 2014 album ‘Too Bright’, and that’s why I can’t wait for his next one, ‘No Shape’, which should drop on May 5th via Matador.

On Tuesday, Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, shared a new video for his first single ‘Slip Away’, and if the song has really nothing to do with the Paul Simon classic, the imagery seems to have escaped from a European 17th century painting. Hadreas dances over fat electro beats and expansive synth, with a marquise-dressed male lover in a series of very bucolic places, and the synth-pop song repeatedly explodes into epic proportions, while the two escape in a garden where they literally eat the forbidden juicy peach and escape some sad and ugly clown characters watching them.

Of course, there still are Hadreas’ fragile and emotive vocals and the whole thing has the epic and romantic dimension of a technicolor super-production. There’s so much running through mousseline veils, so many flower petals and rays of light, that you may get intoxicated after watching the video a few times.

According to the Fader, Perfume Genius recruited Fiona Apple’s collaborator Blake Mills to help produce ‘No Shape’, which promises to be even more accomplished than the previous, anger-charged. ‘Too Bright’

‘I pay my rent,’ Hadreas said in a press release. ‘I’m approaching health. The things that are bothering me personally now are less clear, more confusing. I don’t think I really figured them out with these songs. There’s something freeing about how I don’t have it figured out. Unpacking little morsels, magnifying my discomfort, wading through buried harm, laughing at or digging in to the embarrassing drama of it all. I may never come out the other side but it’s invigorating to try and hopefully, ultimately helpful. I think a lot of them are about trying to be happy in the face of whatever bullshit I created for myself or how horrible everything and everyone is.’
